Mechanical Switch Actuation in A Nutshell
Switch Actuation refers to the distance between the top of a mechanical switch to the bottom of the mechanical switch. These measurements can actually make a difference to typing and gaming efficiency.
As show in the image below, you will notice the travel distance of a regular mechanical switch starting at 4mm (millimeters) with the midway point at 2mm (which then becomes the reset point); being the point where the switch activates and registers a key press. So, any movement prior to reaching the 2mm mark, won't register any key command. These measurements will vary from one mechanical switch to another, although most regular mechanical switches designed for mechanical keyboards, will have the same actuation travel distance and reset points.
The other mechanical switch in the image is that of a low-profile mechanical switch, the same low-profile switch that features in the Hexgears Immersion A3. These low-profile switches offer a shorter actuation distance than regular mechanical switches, part being, they measure half the height of regular mechanical switches, with the reset point at 1.2mm.
This will make key presses more effective due to the shorter travel distance of the switch, and faster key press registration due to the shorter reset point. A reset point is a point to which the mechanical switch needs to get to before it can activate again.
Although most users won't notice any significant difference, it is worth noting that depending on your usage scenario, a lower switch actuation travel distance will serve you well.
If you're looking for faster response times to your pro-gaming, or looking to improve your overall typing and gaming efficiency, then you'll want to opt for a mechanical keyboard with a switch that offers a shorter actuation distance.
It worth pointing that low actuation is also present in some regular mechanical switches. So, you'll want to take a closer look at the specs and features of mechanical switches when picking out a mechanical keyboard.
